Project 6 First Project Review

  1. Hi Natalie!
I'm not sure but I think it's a record of the boy's daily life or weekend life because you filmed him packing snacks and getting out of the car. Like you, I also chose to record a person's daily activity as a project topic, so I know that is difficult to capture in the multifarious daily and create the characters' emotions, and by the time filming I think every daily actions is very ordinary, so it's difficult to create special in if through the camera for us as photographers. I think your photo 1 reveals the feeling that the boy is eager to go out, but the distance between the camera and the boy is a little too far, which weakens the feeling and emphasizes the contrast of indoor and outdoor light instead. Photo 2 The boy's turning back seems to contain some reluctance. In photo 3, I did not feel the obvious emotion and the boy's head was low in the composition. I also noticed that the sky was overexposed in all shots with sky. Pay attention to the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed settings when shooting on sunny, well-lit days. Try setting the aperture and ISO at a lower value and changing the shutter speed. Photo 4 has an unusual POV. The clear face and blurry background amplify the facial details, but I can't guess what his eyes are trying to say. Photos 5-9 are more obvious sequences of action, clearly depicting the actions of the boy filling the snack and putting it in the bag. I can tell from the light and shadow that you should have used a flash, while another light source might be sunlight or light inside the house. You handled the backlight effects well, but in future shots you can try different POVs to avoid negative photography elements. Photo 5 has a good DOF, informing the environment and focusing on the action. But it's better to pay more attention to the focal point, photo 6 is out of focus causing blurring. In photo 8-9, shooting perspective changes from the third person to more like the first person. I think this will refine the activities of the characters, but they cannot express their emotions without the characters.

My suggestion would be to try to use more shooting angles and light, and make more use of the lines and shapes in the shooting background to create a feeling. For example, the window, car window, kitchen storage rack and work table can all change the feeling of the background to the photo through different angles. Also, be aware of how composition and the proportion of the person in the picture affect the picture. Some of your shots are missing the top of the person's head or have too much white space, which affects the balance of the picture. Try as much as possible to capture the picture without the boy noticing, it may be surprisingly effective. Natalie you have a great start. Relax and blend into the environment might allow you to record better!
